Diary of an untamed wild beast

CHAPTER 3

“You were the one cleaning?” My mom asked. Eyes with fury as soon as I appeared back in the sitting room. I could convince myself that it was probably because of her outstretched injured leg but I knew better. “Yes mom I was the one cleaning.” I said with a fear filled trembling voice. “The power went out while I was still cleaning. I didn’t think it was a hazard…” I hurried to try and explain. “Save it Mery!” My mom lashed out such that even Viola trembled at her hush tone. “I can’t believe you.” She continued in a steadier though evidently angry voice. “First you drug us, then you try to do it again and again and when that doesn’t happen you set a trap for me.” “What? A trap...? Mom I swear that is not what happened.” “Shut your mouth...! Meredith Seaton you had better get out of my face while you still can.” “Mom I was just trying to be good. I was trying to be the daughter you want.” I wasn’t sure if my voice was trembling out of fear or out of the mere realization that my own mother believed I was her worst enemy. “You could never be the daughter I want Meredith Seaton, because you have no good stored up anywhere inside of you. You are a liar, a cheater, a drunkard, a prostitute, a junkie. What makes you think I would want a daughter like that? Heaven knows that of all the miscarriages I had, not a day goes by that I don’t wish that any other of my babies could have survived besides you.” Tears welled down my eyes at these words. My dad chose that very moment to enter through the front door. “You know what? I wish I wasn’t your daughter.” I replied behind a tearful voice. My mom was surprised at these unexpected words. “Being your daughter is the greatest curse that has ever been bestowed on me. No matter how much I try to be good you never appreciate it. Maybe if you were a good enough mom you would have realized why I turned into those traits in the first place. But you are too self-righteous to even see why. But you know what? I will make things easier for you…” My dad stepped closer into the room towards us. “Mery that’s enough.” My dad interjected. I was so sad and angry at the same time that I couldn’t even reply my dad. “What happened?” “Your daughter set a trap for me, that’s what happened.” My dad looked to me for clarification but got none. Instead I stormed towards my room. I slammed the door, threw myself on my bed and wept bitterly. Ted Seaton watched his daughter walk away. He knew Meredith was a sly actor. She wouldn’t even mind putting nails into her eyes just so she would cry. Ever since she was something like 11 years, she had gotten into trouble so much. He had seen it too many times, situations when she would pretend to be remorseful but her tears and emotions were nowhere close to being sincere. However, it was different this time. He had personally witnessed what his wife had said to his daughter; even a stone heart would crush at those words. His wife must have been really angry to let any of those words out of her mouth, especially directed towards their only child. His heart broke to pieces at the mere utterance such that he couldn’t imagine what it felt like for his little girl. Suddenly he was stuck in the middle not sure what to do; whether he needed to go after and comfort his daughter or stay and tend to his wife’s injury. With a deep breath he decided to tend to his wife. Meredith was probably locked up in her room anyway and wouldn’t even dream of opening the door for him. He softly squatted and got hold of his wife’s injured foot. “What happened?” “She sat a trap for me. She plugged the vacuum cleaner in the sitting room and then put it in the dining room. It was dark so I tripped. “Viola can you please get me the first aid kit.” “Yes sir!” the older woman was up in a whisk. Mr. Seaton carried Mrs. Seaton in the meantime and placed her on the nearby sofa before gently removing her shoes and examining the extent of her injury.
* * *
I was lying on my bed sniffing from all the crying when there was a knock on the door. Thinking that it was probably my father I didn’t even bother to answer. The knock sounded again, softer than the first but I still ignored it. “Ms. Meredith are you okay in there?” Viola asked softly as if unsure whether or not it was okay to even ask. Realizing that it was only her, I rose to my feet and unlocked the door. “Yes viola I am okay. Thank you for your concern.” I said peeping out my bedroom door. It was unbelievable how this woman had been more a mom to me than my own mother ever was. Growing up I talked to her about everything. I told her about my friends, my day at school, and everything that girls talked to their moms about when they reached the adolescent stage. She even knew I had my menses before my mom. I lacked love from my mom but I always got it from the woman who stood at my door at that very moment. “I’m sorry about what your mom said. She didn’t mean any of those things, she loves you.” “I was just trying to be good…” “I know. But both you and I know just how much you screwed up in the past few years you can’t blame them for not trusting you right away. Give it time, they will come around. I am really proud of your efforts the past few days regardless of whether your mom sees it or not.” “Thank you Viola. You have no idea how much that means to me.” “Just keep up what you are doing, prove to your mom that there is good in you.” “Thank you…” “I’m proud of you Mery.” Tears welled down my eyes at these words. Oh how I wish it was my mother saying those words to me. “Well I better get the first aid kit to your parents.” She said, looking down at her hands I noticed for the first time the red box she carried. “Good night!” “Good night Viola and thanks again.” “Well I better get these to your father.” I forced a sad smile and she smiled back before advancing towards the sitting room. I sadly closed the door. I still didn’t know how this woman has been more of a motherly figure to me than my own mother. She always knew just what to say to make me feel better. I knew she genuinely meant it when she said she was proud of me. Heaven knew I would give just about anything to have my mom say those exact words to me. But where my mom was concerned; whatever I tried to do, it was like it was never good enough. My own mother had completely lost hope when it came to me and even treated me like a stranger. I had tried, there was no effort beyond the one I put today. My mom believed that I was a good for nothing, junkie, drunkard prostitute. Worst yet she wished she had miscarried me and any one of her babies should have survived other than me. That meant that even if I died she wouldn’t care; in fact, it must mean that her life would be better off without me. Maybe that is exactly what I would do, she didn’t want me around? Then I should leave. With tears rolling down my eyes I started gently packing my clothes into my language bag. I tiptoed to the sitting room a few minutes later. My parents were no longer there. On my way back as I went past their room I could hear some feint voices coming from there. After tendering to my mom’s ankle and wrist my dad must have taken her to the bedroom so she could rest. I took the opportunity to go back into my room, collect my bag and as quietly as I could and left through the front door. Figuring out that if I opened the remote controlled gate it would be too noisy, I decided to use the small back gate. It was already dark and that almost had me change my mind; but I was determined to leave. I took a courageous breath with my eyes closed and moved on as soon as I opened my eyes.

Mr. Seaton tossed and turned throughout the night. He hadn’t been able to sleep since he gave his wife allegex to help her sleep through the night without being awaken by the pain on her ankle and wrist. They didn’t seem broken, only twisted. He decided he would see how both injuries would turn out the following morning. If they were in the least inflamed or showed any sign of getting worse they would go see the doctor. For now however, she seemed okay. He had wanted to know what really transpired. He had heard his wife’s side of the story and just wanted to hear his daughter’s after her mother fell asleep. He had gone to Meredith’s room and knocked several times with no answer. He even tried to open the door but it was locked. He reckoned that maybe it was best to give her some privacy, after what she went through earlier, she needed to recollect her thoughts; on her own. He would have left her alone until morning if only he could sleep without being worried whether or not she was okay. It was after midnight when he finally decided to get out of bed to check on her once more. This time with the knowledge that he had found the door locked the first time, he searched through the key store and found Meredith’s room key. Getting to her door he knocked softly about three times before putting the key through the cylinder lock to open. The scene that met him was not very pleasing. Meredith was not on her bed. The bed was still kept, a sign that she hadn’t slept on it. Panicking he rushed to her wall wardrobe and although he found some of her clothes there, her toiletry, make up and shoes were gone. His greatest fear had finally come true; his little girl had run away from home. He immediately went to the sitting room to try and call her and convince her to come back home so they could talk but he remembered that they had taken away both her cell phones. Oh God! How did they end up here?

CHAPTER 4

31 December 2016

Dear diary

Today is New Year’s Eve. Well I guess you could already tell from the date on my update. But that’s not the only special thing about it. You see, it also marks my 12 months in Francistown. Things have been going really well for me here; with no one telling me what to do or say. It’s just me and Rosie. We drank, we partied, and we did whatever we wanted. Everything had been amazing; well except for the fact that about a few months ago my account dried out. Rosie made it very clear that she couldn’t take care of everything on her own so she match made me with her boyfriend’s ‘married’ twin brother. I had initially said no but when she gave me the ultimatum to either say yes to the match making, go out and get a job or go back home, I had no choice but to say yes. I didn’t want to because I still wanted my fun with men. He had assured me that all he wanted was for me to fit in when his wife was not around to satisfy him, in return he pays my rent, buys me clothes and food, takes care of me in every way possible. I hated the idea and still do, but so far for the past month I have only seen him 3 times so maybe I could find a way to tolerate the idea. Today though we are going to a very special party, commonly known as the Bash 21. This is the most exclusive event in Francistown. It’s a joined party for 10 people who are turning 21 on the first of January. Courtesy of an entertainment empire known as Youth’s Home entertainment, each of the participants had to cast a certain amount towards the party. The party goes on for 21 hours until the 1st of January. The invitations are so scarce but somehow Rosina had found a way to get her hands on 2 of them. Now we are ready and waiting for the cab to arrive and take us there. We would take Rosie’s car but we are probably going to be too drunk to drive after the party so we will call a cab.
* * *
The party was nothing like I thought it would be. It was hosted in a hotel outdoor events area. The area was all covered in artificial lawn. There were burners all around the place that read ‘welcome to adulthood’. There were 2 and 1 balloons which from my guess should have been at least 10. I looked around and as my eyes travelled they settled on a group of guys not far from the bar counter. The young men looked jolly and some even wasted. ‘It was only the beginning of the party when did they get to start drinking such that at this time they were already so drunk?’ My eyes settled on one of the group who rather looked uncomfortable. He had an orange juice in his hand and would constantly look on with disgust whenever one of the drunk guys acted inappropriately in any way. He was so attractive. His hair was pitch black but he was rather light in complexion, his eyes looked sleepy yet awake as they were huge, his mouth looked so juicy and of course kissable. Although he was sitting down I could still see his well-built broad shoulders. I could guess that his height was around 1.8m, more than tall enough to be a model, and he would make a fantastic one. More than that he looked familiar. I was sure I had seen him somewhere but I quickly dismissed the thought. I got so mesmerized by his looks that I didn’t even hear when Rosie called out to me. “Mer are you coming?” “Oh sorry did you say something?” “Let’s go get some drinks.” “Oh right!” We got moving again. There was a bar stand in the middle of the field and a waiter wearing black pants and a white formal shirt with a black bow tie served people drinks. Rosie and I walked up to the podium. “And forget about him. He is out of your league.” She warned simply. “What?” By this time, we were already settling down on the bar chairs. “Hello ladies! My name is Chad; I am your bar attender. How may I be of service to you?” the handsome bar-attender remarked as we settled down. “Well hello Chad. I’m Rosie…and this is my best friend Meredith.” I said smiling juice fully as if he was some kind of a very delicious meal. “Well Ms. Rosie…and Meredith, how may I assist you?” He smiled confidently. “Well you could start by getting me some orange juice.” I waited patiently as Rosie conversed with the bar attender. “Anything for you Ms. Meredith?” “Yah a tequila will do thanks.” I said “Tequila? Mery are you serious? We just got here.” Rosina exclaimed. “So!? We came here for fun didn’t we? Let me have my fun please, by all means. Will you be getting me that tequila?” I turned to the bar attender. “Coming Right up.” He said and turned into his uncommonly large to be outside mobile bar. “Tell me about him.” “He is out of your league ok. Just let it go.” “Why don’t you let me be the judge of that?” “That’s Matthias Baletile. He is a p.k. No matter what you try he is not the type you are used to. He will never budge no matter how much you try to flirt with him.” “What is a pastor’s kid doing in a place like this?” I asked keeping my eye on him. “Well his best friend’s sister is one of the bash 21 queens. I suppose that must be the reason why he is here. So please don’t cause any trouble tonight okay.” “I want him…” I turned to my best friend, “I’m gonna have him.” Rosina knew me well enough to know that the tone I used at that very moment was the one I usually used when I was absolutely determined to achieve a goal; and right about now my goal was getting Matth… something. “Here are your drinks ladies.” The waiter said placing our drinks on the counter, which was a very welcome gesture under the circumstances. I didn’t have low confidence or low self-esteem but alcohol always helped me think better during times such as these. I knew exactly what I wanted; I wanted that p.k. I quickly snatched the small glass and swallowed the contents in one gulp. I put it on the counter and closed my eyes against the bitter taste of the alcohol beverage. “Again!” Chad poured me a second and third glass at my command. As I slammed the glass against the counter for a third time I felt uneasy. If I still wasn’t I was getting there. “Would you stop drinking?” Rosina scolded. I didn’t care what she had to say. One thing was for a fact, I needed the energy and confidence to approach the guy. “No!” I answered automatically. At this point I felt nauseous and maybe on the verge of passing out. I forced my eyes open and shook my head; probably to wake my brain. I stumbled out of my chair and almost fell at the mercy of my 6 inch stilettos but managed to steady myself just on time to regain my balance. “Mery please don’t do this. I don’t feel like getting embarrassed tonight.” Rosie begged holding grip of my upper arm to try and stop me but I simply just shook myself loose. I put one step in front of the other as if I was modelling. The group of guys turned and looked at me as I cat walked in their direction. I had my eyes on one person and he must have noticed because he started to look uneasy. I got closer and closer with each step, however I also felt more and more nauseous with each step. I stood directly in front of my target as he also stared into my eye as if waiting to know my reason for coming all the way towards them to just keep quiet and stare at him. Well the truth was that I was feeling too nauseous to form even a single word. I brought up my hand to cover my mouth as I felt I was about to throw up. Too bad for me it was too late. Before I could control myself the alcohol that I had just consumed decided to separate with my body. Since I was facing him the contents of my stomach splashed all over my target and as he froze, awe stricken, bottom mouth dropping in utter surprise, I suddenly felt too tired and collapsed.
* * *
Matthias Baletile awoke at his 6am alarm ringing. He took a few minutes without getting out of bed although he was fully awake. It was a Sunday and he needed to get to church. First though he needed to go and pick up his family from the airport. His parents, sisters and daughter had gone to a church conference in Johannesburg and were landing at 8.30 am. He felt a bit tired after he got home really late the previous night. Time was not on his side though, so he found the last ounce of strength left in him to get out of bed. He went over to the bathroom to turn the geyser on and then advanced inside to clean his teeth. He then went into the kitchen to make himself a cup of the much needed black coffee. He sat at the family dining table and took his time to drink every drop out of the mug. When he was done he went back into the bathroom to take a bath. He took off his pyjamas and threw them into the laundry basket and remained with only his boxer shorts. They hit the side bringing it down to the floor and spilling its contents in the process. He bent down to put the laundry back and bring the basket up. That’s when he came across the pants from last night; which that silly girl had messed up. It smelled of fermented alcohol. Alcohol was of course fermented but that was from barley but when that had happened in the stomach, it was another thing altogether. It smelled horrible. Why the hell did he go to that stupid party? Well he had to. His best friend, Max’s sister was one of the queens and he begged him to brace the event. Also, Max himself was going to school abroad so it was his gift to him. If only he had said no, he could have gotten him any other gift. But he said yes and this happened. He was leaving today. He was forced to go back into the kitchen, retrieve a refuse bag from the kitchen unit drawer to put it inside. He would take it to the trash can after he finished bathing but at that moment he needed to get ready for the airport.
* * *
The sun found its way into my bedroom. I stretched and was surprised to find myself at home when I opened my eyes. I looked around the room to make sure that truly I was home. I jumped out of bed and stormed to Rosina’s room. She was still sound asleep so I shook her awake. “Rosie wake up!” “You know if you are here to trouble me when I sleep you should probably go back home. Are you naturally a peasant or are you just being one to piss me off?” She responded and unwillingly sat up on the bed. “How did it go last night? Did he fall for me?” I asked eagerly and my best friend clearly didn’t need me to specify what I meant exactly. “Are you for real? How it went last night is that you embarrassed the both of us at the most covered event in Francistown. What were you thinking? God I should have gotten 1 ticket instead of 2. You truly are an embarrassment when you are drunk.” I smiled and Rosie knew that that had to mean that I couldn’t care less what she thought. “I told you he wasn’t in your league. He will never fall for your nasty tricks like all the other who you get wagging their tails at you like they are some sort of tamed dog begging for mercy.” “Didn’t I tell you to never say never?” “Mery no!” she warned. Rosie was more than aware that I could be naughty if I wanted to; and currently I didn’t feel very much like being a good girl because that was not going to get me the guy I wanted. “Which church does he go to?” “Mery don’t do this…” “Which church Rosie?” “The Chosen Generation Ministries.” She said unwillingly. Immediately I got up from her bed and headed for my own bedroom. Rosie quickly jumped out of bed and followed me. “Mery you can’t do this. You are only going to embarrass yourself. In fact, you are going to embarrass both of us. Matthias would never be interested in you no matter what you do.” My best friend knew how to push my buttons. She followed me around like death as I bathed and then got off the bathroom to find a suitable outfit out of my wardrobe to wear. “Mery you can’t do this. Please don’t do this.” I went on as if I couldn’t hear her. “Okay you know what? If you go anywhere I will tell Rick about this.” She said and nodded, sure of herself. My mind went down memory lane to how it happened that this ‘Rick’ came into my life. You see the truth is that I have never wanted a stable relationship. Personally for me it is a waste of time and energy. I never in a million years imagined myself ever having to have such a relationship. My dear friend Rosina had a different believe; and the worst part is she tried to impose the same belief on me. It had been just a few months since I came to Francistown. Upon my arrival here, I had at my disposal 50k from my trust account which had matured a few months back when I turned 21. Apart from the P12000 that she actually convinced me to place towards rent 6 months in advance, and the P4000 we put to the abortion clinic, Rosie and I had squandered the money on clothes, shoes, hair, makeup, and alcohol. Since someone wise once said ‘nothing lasts forever’, it wasn’t long before my account dried out. Rosie made it very clear to me that I had 3 choices…1. Get a boyfriend who could pay all my bills because she was not prepared to handle all the bills on her own, 2. Got out and get a job and bring home a cheque or 3. Go back home to my parents. I knew I couldn’t go back home after everything that happened between me and my folks. Besides the reason for leaving my home in the first place was for freedom to live my life the way I want. Going back home wouldn’t exactly support that. I couldn’t go and find a job either. I had never in a million years imagined myself working; especially a low paying job since I never exactly got to complete tertiary school so working was not an option either. That left me with the only one option, to find myself a boyfriend who could pay my bills. I had decided that I would start the search really soon but my ‘bestie’ was quite ahead as she match made me with her boyfriend’s twin brother. I was furious at first but somehow she convinced me that she had my best interests at heart as doing this was saving me the trouble of having to look for some guy we both didn’t know. Setting the ground rules, we agreed that he cared for my every need in return for me caring for his every need. I figured that since he told me that his wife was temporarily at her home village for pre and post-natal care as well as confinement I didn’t have to worry about him interfering with my life except for when he needed something. But that is not what happened because sometimes he would get angry at me looking at another guy; so I knew why Rosina was using him as a threat. “Would you stop with all the nagging?” I said carelessly. “I will tell him if you do this.” “You wouldn’t dare. We have a BFF code, to never let a man come between us no matter what. If you tell any of this to the twins, you would be breaking that code and our friendship is over. Now how do I look?” “You have no idea what you are doing Mery. This isn’t just about our BFF code okay. The twins deal shrewdly with anyone who double crosses then. You are occupied now, you better accept that and not try to go outside the circle that Rick has created for you.” “Okay first of all he is married, he has a wife so why should I stay glued to him when he obviously is committed elsewhere? Second of all I didn’t even want this but you forced me to it. You know very well that I do not want stability in relationships. I just want fun on my way to somewhere else. But despite that you had to force me to agree to a long term relationship…” “…Because you needed it.” She added. “Meredith you don’t have a dime to your name. I wasn’t prepared to take care of your every need okay. All those one night stands couldn’t pay your bills.” “You are welcome…” I said although she never exactly said thank you. “Rosie we squandered that money together remember. I bought all the food, toiletries, clothes, hair and even paid the rent in advance. You did all this so if anything goes wrong, it’s on your head not mine. Besides I am not really interested in the guy. I just want to see if he is a tough as you make him out to be. I want to see him get on his knees and beg me for mercy. I want to see him curse the day that he stepped into a party that wasn’t in his league. And then when I have had my fun, I will spit him out and turn away like he never even existed. Now I am late for church so how do I look?” Rosie took a deep breath, evidently feeling defeated. She knew there was nothing she could think of in a million years to change my mind but she just had to try.
* * *
I got to church 30 minutes late. An usher led me to an empty chair and I smiled in gratitude before settling down. The service was boring as hell but I knew my purpose for going in the first place, and that’s what kept me there. The Pastor’s son Matthias was sitting in the front row and I made sure that I stole a glance at him every chance I got. If coming to church was what it would take to have this guy wrapped around my little finger, so be it. It seemed like eternity before the pastor finally dismissed the congregation. I kept my eyes on Matthias. It seemed like everyone knew that I was a first time visitor because they all didn’t miss the chance to irritate and distract me as they passed by. It was just so irritating, they were wasting my precious time. One blink and Matthias was gone. I had only looked down briefly at an elderly woman who was welcoming me but when my head came up a few seconds later he was gone. I thanked the woman for the welcome and then started towards the front row. Before I could fall to step number 2, another woman came towards me with the broadest smile that you could never mistake for fake. “Hello and welcome to The Chosen Generation ministries. We are so glad you decided to join us.” She said as she gave me a brief hug. “Hello! Thank you. I am glad I could join you.” I returned the smile but not with as much enthusiasm. “My name is Mitchell. I am the pastor’ wife and you are...?” This woman had the most perfect slender body. Her skin looked like she used milk to bathe it. It was as smooth and delicate as an infant’s. Her brown eyes were big and round but fitted very well with the rest of her face. Her mouth, now that was surely Matthias’ mouth; so juicy and kissable. The pastor knew what he was doing when he chose this woman for a wife. Added to that she seemed like the nicest person in the whole church. “I am Meredith!” “Welcome to our family Meredith. Is it your first time visiting us?” “Yes it is!” “Well you are welcome.” “Thank you.!” She paused for a few moments and I thought she would just bid me goodbye and leave. However, she didn’t… “So who invited you?” Now it was my turn to freeze. I suddenly realized that no one invited me but I was not going to say that. I figured that if I should be able to get him, I might as well go through his mom, so I put forward the only name that came to my mind at that moment. “Matthias did!” “Matthias! My son?” she didn’t even attempt to hide her surprise. So she wasn’t only beautiful in the inside and outside, she was also honest. Perhaps, hopefully, her son would turn out the same way. “Yes…Matthias Baletile.” “Well then you must be one lucky young lady. Are you two friends? “Yes!” I cleared my throat and furthered my lie, shameless that I was in church. “You could say that. Although it hasn’t been that long.” “Well he hasn’t said anything about you.” “Yes well, we haven’t exactly spoken this morning so he isn’t sure whether I am here or not. I didn’t see him before he left.” “Oh don’t worry. He hasn’t left. He is still around here somewhere.” She looked around as if trying to spot him and when she didn’t she diverted her attention back to me. “Do you have any means of getting home?” “Of course. I have taxi fare so it’s okay?” “You came by taxi? My sincere apologies. It would occur that my son hasn’t learnt anything from me all these years. He wasn’t supposed to invite you and then let you navigate your way here. Don’t worry about it though. He will be taking you home afterwards. He came alone in his car.” “I don’t think that would be necessary…really!” “Don’t worry, it’s the least I can do to ensure that you visit us again.” Okay this conversation was better than I thought. This woman was already getting her son trapped under me without her knowledge. But what if Matt found out what I said to his mom? Man I couldn’t even begin to imagine what would happen if that were to happen. I should be ashamed of myself. I didn’t even consider the fact that I was telling lies in a sacred place… “Hello and welcome to The Chosen Generation Ministries.” Matthias said as he stepped beside his mom and I, without even daring to take a closer look at me. “Matthias!” Mitchell started. “We were just talking about you.” Okay so maybe her honesty was not such a good thing after all. I bit my lip in utter nervousness. “Is that so? And what exactly were you discussing about me?” he asked concentrated on his mother. “Well Meredith here was telling me how you invited her to church and then let her navigate her way here all by herself.” “Who is Meredith?” he asked sincerely clueless. “So now you are going to pretend you don’t know your own friend?” she looked to me for clarification.
